Westmead Hospital Redevelopment
JBS&G was engaged to undertake pre-refurbishment asbestos surveys of proposed refurbishment areas throughout Westmead Hospital. The areas comprised existing ward space, staff offices, emergency department and operating theatres. At the time of the surveys, the majority of refurbishment areas were still occupied and operational with hospital staff, patients and visitors within the works areas. This introduced a significant number of constraints due to the sensitivity of the project with some areas only accessible outside of normal working hours. Sampling was required to be destructive where possible without damaging the integrity of the material. Intrusive sampling was generally undertaken with materials sealed/made safe to prevent potential exposure to staff/patients/visitors.
In addition to the above ground hazmat works, JBS&G was also responsible for conducting a campus-wide assessment of asbestos in soil and development of appropriate in-ground asbestos management controls both as part of the $1B hospital redevelopment and also the existing hospital grounds. The works were overseen by various stakeholders and regulatory bodies and included a range of risk communication workshops and forums.
